Orchid protection day
Aug 23rd, 2008 by admin
One of the best kept secrets on the Mornington Peninsula, Warringine Park is a 250ha conservation park located in Bittern on the shores of Western Port. The park is divided into three sections: a Coastal Wetland, a Creekland and Woodland; all with their own special values.
The creek section follows the Warringine Creek and protects significant woodland and riparian vegetation including dense tea-tree thickets carpeted with thick moss beds. Up to 10 orchid species have been recorded in the moss beds including tall greenhood, gnat, sun, onion and sundew species. Intensive hand weeding over the last few years by the Friends of Warringine Park has seen the orchids bounce back with a vengeance so to celebrate National Threatened Species day, we’ll be back weeding the site again. Meet at Warrenda - the Warringine Park Office at 9am.
